In the last few weeks, we have combed through mock draft and average draft position data via the Fantasy Football Calculator to name the most overvalued and undervalued players in fantasy drafts.
It is all opinion based, of course, but I have not had too many objections to the choices I made this year: Kevin Kolb as the most overvalued quarterback and Ryan Mathews as the most overvalued running back.
As far as the undervalued players are concerned, there was some backlash to Mark Sanchez as the most undervalued quarterback. But it is hard to get too upset about a guy being drafted in the low 20s at his position in fantasy drafts, considering all the weapons he has around him this season (and now, possibly, Terrell Owens to the Jets?!?).
Fantasy owners love a good controversy and a chance to bash other fantasy owners whenever possible (or prank them), but I am not sure either of the wide receivers chosen for these monikers will elicit much of a response. Ho-hum, such is life.
If you do have any objection to these or any of our choices so far, make sure to have your voice heard by submitting a comment below the post!
The Most Overvalued Fantasy Wide Receiver in 2010
Vincent Jackson, Chargers
It is pretty easy to pick on a guy who is threatening to sit out the first 10 weeks of the season. You would think, however, that his threat would be enough to keep his fantasy value down.
But that is not the case at all with Jackson.
Despite the threat of a lengthy holdout — not to mention his three-game suspension to start the season — Jackson is being taken as the No. 14 wide receiver in fantasy mock drafts according to Fantasy Football Calculator. His average draft position has him coming off the board early in the 4th round of mock drafts. Perhaps fantasy owners are banking of Jackson getting traded at some point in the next few weeks.
That is borderline WR1 draft status, for a guy who is definitely going to miss three games and could miss a whole lot more. A lot for fantasy owners to risk if he is a man of his word and if the Chargers stick to their guns. Especially now that quarterback Philip Rivers has said that it would be nice to have Jackson, but that the Chargers do not need Jackson to win.
Ouch.
Others: Randy Moss, Patriots; Mike Walker, Jaguars
The Most Undervalued Fantasy Wide Receiver in 2010
Sidney Rice, Vikings
Just so you guys do not start saying I am completely risk averse, throw Rice into the undervalued category come fantasy draft day.
Sure, there is a chance Brett Favre will not play this year (no, there is not). And even if he does play, there is the likelihood he will not be as good this year and that someone’s numbers — maybe Rice’s — will be negatively impacted.
But for a guy who had his fantasy coming-out party last year in a big way, in an offense that changed very little this offseason, Rice is slated for another massive campaign. And his value is such that fantasy owners can get him as a WR1 in the middle of the 3rd round. Not too shabby if you can pick up a top running back (Maurice Jones-Drew, Ray Rice or Michael Turner) and then a top tier quarterback (Drew Brees, Peyton Manning) in the first and second rounds, respectively.
Others: Greg Jennings, Packers; Hakeem Nicks, Giants; Jerricho Cotchery, Jets
