Rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant signed a five-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys yesterday, becoming the first 2010 first-round draft pick to agree to terms with a team.
This is pretty big news, especially if your name is Roy Williams.
Bryant, a tall, play-making receiver, will become an immediate threat to not only Williams’ playing time but also his roster spot. The veteran has mostly underwhelmed as a pro, especially during his tenure with the Cowboys.
The emergence of Miles Austin last season exacerbated the anti-Williams sentiment among fantasy owners. If Bryant comes in and tears it up during camp, Williams’ name may not even show up on draft boards next month.
Bryant could be a starter opposite Austin on opening day. Only San Diego rookie running back Ryan Mathews can claim a starting spot right now, as Mathews is in line to take LaDainian Tomlinson’s spot from the very start of the 2010 season.
Other first-round rookies who could become day one starters:
- Sam Bradford, QB, Rams
- C.J. Spiller, RB, Bills
- DeMaryius Thomas, WR, Broncos
- Jahvid Best, RB, Lions
Notable missing from this list: Tim Tebow, QB, Broncos. No surprise there, right?
Here are today’s great reads:
- More on what the Cowboys face from a fantasy football perspective heading into the 2010 season. Sounds like expectations are high — very high — for the Cowboys this year both in real and fake football. Fantasy owners should have plenty of options off the Cowboys’ offense. [FanHouse]
- Last year’s rookie running backs did not fare so well in fantasy circles for much of the season. But several of those players, like Shonn Greene and Beanie Wells, have high ceilings this season. Fantasy owners, meanwhile, have responded favorably to the prospect that these guys hit it big this year. [ProFootballTalk]
- Greg Jennings may have let down a few of his fantasy owners last year with a meager touchdown output (four), but that could help owners looking to grab him in drafts this year. By keeping his value lower, fantasy owners can get Jennings for a bargain. And I think those touchdown numbers will at least double this season. [SI.com]
