Every year, everywhere across the country, every fantasy league sits down and has their annual draft.  And no round is more heavily anticipated than the first round.  After all, the beginning of your season begins when your team is on the clock for that first pick.

The first round selection is held to such a high standard, that anything below All-Star stats is considered a bust.  Typically, there is always a  player that will never live up to their preseason hype, and thus will potentially send your team into a whirlwind.

In 2007, we had Larry Johnson (ADP 1.03) and Shaun Alexander (ADP 1.06).  Johnson finished with a dismal three touchdowns while Alexander only finished one TD better with four scores.  Both of those performances are worthy of the “First Round Bust Hall of Fame”  (coming soon to a monitor near you…).

In 2008, Joseph Addai led the pack in first round busts.  He followed up his 2007 year of 12 touchdowns with a poor campagin in ‘08.  His 544 rushing yards with five touchdowns left owners feeling bamboozled.

Need I go on?  Okay, one more example.  2009 was going to be the year of Matt Forte.  His rookie season in ‘08 was promising, and great accomplishments were on the horizon for this former Tulane star.  A four-touchdown season burned his owners however.

So which 1st round pick will burn owners this year?  Well, I don’t have a crystal ball, but speculation is my middle name, so I’ll give you the low down on my potential first round bust (Hint: Look at the picture).

Steven Jackson (RB – St. Louis Rams)

Jackson has been a mainstay in the top 10 for the past four years purely on his potential.  He is currently enjoying a 1.08 average draft position in 2010 mock drafts.

Potential is one thing, but looking at his stats, the ranking just isn’t justified.  He hasn’t hit double-digit rushing touchdowns in any of the past 3 seasons and he plays on a team whose offense is, in a word, terrible.

With no significant upgrades on the offensive side of the ball, Jackson looks to disappoint his owners for the fourth season in a row.  This will be his seventh season in the league and he has over 1,500 carries logged.  The potential for an epic bust is looming large for this once-promising talent.
