Those of you who have been playing fantasy football the last 10 years or so know that an NFL without Terrell Owens is no NFL at all.
Unless you are talking about the No Fun League.
Owens has been a staple in fantasy drafts for much of the last decade, if not all of it. During his prime, Owens’ fantasy studliness was never questioned. It was his attitude and off-the-field antics that soured many a fantasy owner on his behalf.
Touched on this briefly yesterday when his name came across a story on the web, but Owens currently is unemployed. Which means that for the first time since he broke into the league, fantasy owners are faced with the reality of a TO-less NFL season.
Where there is a will, however, there is a way. Owens does not sound like a guy ready to hang up his cleats. He still looks like a superior athlete and did not look all that bad in Buffalo last season, considering that he played for … well … Buffalo. If he can land on a good team with an established quarterback, Owens could be more than fantasy relevant again this year.
If I were an NFL betting man, I could not place a stone-cold-lock bet on any one team where Owens could play this season. But there are some fun, interesting possibilities:
Chicago: Jay Cutler thrived with Brandon Marshall (Baby TO) in Denver and could use a big receiver like Owens in Chicago. Fantasy owners, particularly those of Cutler, would much appreciate the addition of Owens. But what about Bears’ fans?
Washington: Reunions are great, especially when it is between two teammates who publicly feuded for the better part of their time together and much, much longer afterward. Owens and Donovan McNabb back together again would be great theater.
Here are today’s great reads:
- I called Kevin Kolb the most overvalued quarterback in fantasy mock drafts so far this summer. The backlash has not come, yet. However, others seem to agree that perhaps Kolb might not be ready to take over as the Eagles’ starting quarterback. [Shutdown Corner]
- When you mention Kolb, Donovan McNabb’s name will almost always surface. The two have been linked for the rest of their careers now based on what happened this offseason. So what about the receivers these guys have to throw to this season, particularly Santana Moss and Jeremy Maclin? I have never been a big Moss fan, but perhaps he will be better with McNabb at the helm. [Roto Arcade]
- A lot of talk about the Raiders’ offense this summer now that JaMarcus Russell has been jettisoned. Jason Campbell will not set the world on fire but should be more consistent and good enough to improve that offense considerably. Now that there should be a more solid passing game, Michael Bush is being groomed as the team’s big, short-yardage specialist. Loved this guy in the past and hope he becomes a consistent fantasy threat in 2010. [FanHouse]
