I took a lot of heat from the readers for writing this column last year when I called Philip Rivers the most overvalued quarterback in 2009 fantasy drafts.
So what does a fantasy blogger do after such a massive failure?
Get right back on the limb. And I am prepared for it to snap again, if it should come to that.
First, some background as to how I came to this decision. Using average draft position (ADP) data from the Fantasy Football Calculator, I compared the rankings of all the quarterbacks being take in mock drafts this summer. Considered where they rank among their peers, how much they are going to cost fantasy owners, and how much experience and results they have produced in recent seasons.
There has been a lot of support this summer for this year’s most overvalued fantasy football quarterback. Including some support right here on this very site.
Let the bashing begin.
For good measure — and perhaps to save some face — I also included the most undervalued quarterback in fantasy mock drafts so far this summer.
The Most Overvalued Fantasy Quarterback in 2010
Kevin Kolb, Eagles
Kolb, seemingly everyone’s favorite “sleeper” this season, is going at a very high value for someone yet to start an NFL season as the starting quarterback. Calling him a sleeper at this point, based on his ranking, is beyond absurd.
He is being drafted eighth among fantasy quarterbacks according to his ADP at the Fantasy Football Calculator. That makes him an early-to-mid 6th round draft pick. Not exactly where you usually get your sleepers, especially since he is being drafted as a starting quarterback ahead of guys like Brett Favre, Jay Cutler and … *clears throat* … Donovan McNabb.
Others: Philip Rivers, Chargers; Tim Tebow, Broncos
The Most Undervalued Fantasy Quarterback in 2010
Mark Sanchez, Jets
The Jets came one game short of a Super Bowl appearance last season, in large part due to Sanchez’s play at quarterback during the NFL playoffs.
Jump to :55 and 1:45 for Sanchez’s touchdown passes against the Colts in the AFC Championship.
The poster-boy rookie made huge strides as a passer down the stretch of the 2009 season and appears poised for a break-out year. New York added Santonio Holmes to the passing game and LaDainian Tomlinson to the backfield, who should be able to help in the screen game. Braylon Edwards was retained for another season and Dustin Keller is emerging as one of the better pass-catching tight ends in the league.
What Sanchez needs to a avoid is a sophomore slump, like the ones suffered by both Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan last year after fabulous rookie campaigns. Currently, Sanchez is a gigantic bargain with an ADP in the 13th round in fantasy mock drafts, which ranks him as the 22nd best fantasy quarterback according to the people.
Others: Kyle Orton, Broncos; Donovan McNabb, Redskins; Alex Smith, 49ers; Chad Henne, Dolphins
