A couple of quick injury updates this morning before getting into the other fantasy news of the day.
By the way, just a quick note, I have not forgotten to mention the Ben Roethlisberger suspension on purpose. Got caught up in a few other stories and life events. There will be fantasy reaction post to that at some point later this week.
Dez Bryant [WR, Cowboys]
From ProFootballTalk:
Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com reports that Bryant, the 24th pick in the 2010 draft, has an irregular heartbeat. Bryant told Watkins that the condition was diagnosed at the Scouting Combine in February.
Perhaps this scared a few teams away more than the whole “diva” angle. Whatever it was that prevented Bryant from flying off the draft board, the Cowboys got an absolute steal near the end of the first round.
Expect Bryant’s and Demaryius Thomas’ careers to be vigilantly compared during the course of their careers. Thomas, as you recall, was the first receiver taken in the 2010 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos.
Brian Westbrook [RB, Eagles]
From ProFootballTalk:
The former Eagles running back reportedly passed the physical he took with the Rams over the weekend and “might very well” sign with the team, according to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News.
Westy could be on his way back to an NFL roster very soon here. It would be an important addition for the Rams, who could use a veteran presence like Westbrook in the locker room.
Especially with a rookie quarterback.
Not that Westbrook would command much fantasy value. As a backup to Steven Jackson, yes. But certainly not as a stand-alone fantasy commodity at this point in his career.
Here are today’s great reads:
- Now that the NFL Draft is over, football fans can start turning their attention once again to fantasy football drafts. What way to better prepare yourself for all those draft this summer than to start some mock drafting right now? [Fantasy Football Calculator]
- The Chargers moved up quite a bit to get their running back of the future in Fresno State’s Ryan Mathews. Now Norv Turner is giving fantasy owners something to chew on heading into the summer: Expect Mathews to get a ton of work this season, making him the No. 1 rookie running back to own in redraft fantasy leagues at this point. [Pancake Blocks]
- San Francisco is almost quietly building a fantasy football juggernaut out on the West Coast. Vernon Davis had a break-through campaign in 2009, but several other players on that offense — including Frank Gore — continue to fly a little below the radar. Hope it stays that way so a guy like Michael Crabtree can remain a nice value pick. [FanHouse]
- If you plan to play in a points-per-reception (PPR) league this season, consider taking a chance on some of these guys late in your fantasy drafts. Julian Edelman should be a decent pick-up in most leagues, as long as he can continue the momentum he gained at the end of 2009. [Hatty Waiver Wire Guru]
