Unfortunately, I did not get to watch much of this year’s NFL Draft. Instead, I spent the majority of my time — and then some — buying a new house and then moving into it.
After I signed my life away at closing on Friday, I finally got a chance to review some of the more fantasy football related happenings during the draft. There were plenty.
I did watch the first round and here are a few things that really stood out to me from a fantasy perspective:
- Ryan Mathews may have the brighest short-term fantasy future, but I think C.J. Spiller is going to be a beast. Too much clutter in that Buffalo backfield right now, though. And watch out for Jahvid Best in Detroit, perfect fit for his speed, quickness and elusiveness.
- Demaryius Thomas may have been the first wide receiver taken in the draft but Dez Bryant fell into the better situation, long term. Kyle Orton/Brady Quinn/Tim Tebow to Thomas does not inspire as much confidence as Tony Romo to Bryant, despite having Miles Autin, Jason Witten and Roy Williams ahead of him in the pecking order.
- Cincinnati drafted the old tight end in the first round — we called it! — and it certainly filled a position of need. Jermaine Gresham, if healthy, will start for the Bengals in week one of the 2010 season.
- As far as quarterbacks taken in the first round, Sam Bradford could be a day one starter and will warrant a late-round pick as a flier in redraft leagues. Tim Tebow, meanwhile, will not warrant such a pick as he likely will be buried behind both Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn on the depth chart.
The rookie rankings I posted last year really helped get me ready for the 2010 fantasy football season and I plan to do those again this year. Stay tuned.
