Bad news for fantasy owners, but great news for NFL players with head injuries: The NFL is enacting new measures each team must follow prior to a concussed player returning to game action.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear that these new rules will go into effect immediately, meaning all of the players recently affected by head injuries will be subject to the new measures.

Sure, this is not what fantasy owners in the thick of playoff races want to hear. But from a human standpoint, these players deserve the utmost care regarding head injuries. Every precaution that can be taken to guarantee their present and future health should be imposed without resistance.

The following players figure to be affected by the new concussion-related measures this weekend:

DeSean Jackson, WR, Eagles: Jackson admits that he does not think he can play this weekend after blacking out during the Washington game last week. The Eagles figure to be more cautious than any other team, too, given what happened to Brian Westbrook earlier this year.

Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Steelers: Many thought Big Ben would play last week (and some thought he should play) but he was told early in the week that he would not suit up. The Steelers will be extra cautious with Ben because of the pounding he usually takes over the course of a game, but it sounds like he will start this weekend.

Kurt Warner, QB, Cardinals: Warner sounded overly optimistic he would play against the Titans last weekend, and we all saw how that worked out. He was benched in favor of Matt Leinart and could face the same fate again this weekend.

Clinton Portis, RB, Redskins: Portis has been ruled out for week 13 against the Saints despite being medically cleared to play by a doctor. He sounds like a guy with his head on straight by taking the time to make sure his head is actually on straight.

Brian Westbrook, RB, Eagles: Westbrook will not suit up again this weekend after suffering two concussions earlier this season. LeSean McCoy has filled in nicely during his absence.

Jamal Lewis, RB, Browns: Not that any fantasy owner in contention is counting on JLew on a week-to-week basis, but Lewis has been shut down for the rest of the 2009 season due a concussion suffered last weekend. Lewis was planning on retiring at the end of the season so this news should only hasten his exit from the game.
