The NBA Playoffs are in full swing, the MLB season is more than a month in and even the NHL playoffs have had some interesting moments. But we all know that football is king, regardless of what is going on in other arenas.
Just look at the wall-to-wall coverage on Brett Favre during the past week-and-a-half. Even with ARod coming back or Kobe battling the Rockets or Lebron dominating the Hawks, Favre was leading off on SportsCenter. I am certainly not complaining about it either.
Well, not entirely at least.
What I do have a complaint with is Favre. I love the guy and I hope he comes back to give it another go with the Vikings. But make up your mind already, be up front with your fans and the media and get this thing done. The sooner you get it over with, the better for all of us.
This offseason has been eerily similar to last when it comes to Favre, and that is not the best way for him to go out. We all know you are coming back, so let’s just make it official already.
That is, of course, if his shoulder checks out OK with the Vikings’ medical staff. No new information has come to light since the report on Friday that Favre did indeed send his X-rays to Minnesota, but something should come out fairly soon on that front. Stay tuned, Favre watch 2009 will continue.
LaDainian Tomlinson [RB, Chargers]
From ESPN.com:
Tomlinson didn’t show any signs of his latest injury. The NFL’s record holder for touchdowns in a season is pleased with his offseason preparations.
LT2 still wants to prove that he has more than enough in the tank after an offseason filled with speculation about his future in San Diego.
The Chargers are paying an awful lot of money to Darren Sproles to “backup” Tomlinson this year and beyond. Tomlinson will turn 30 years old this summer, which — as fantasy footballers know all too well — is the age when most runningbacks begin a steep and drastic decline in productivity. Coming into the 2009 season healthy is a great start for LT if he hopes to buck that trend.
Javon Walker [WR, Raiders]
From SFGate.com:
Raiders receiver Javon Walker had knee surgery last month and told the team about it just a few days ago, coach Tom Cable said.
That’s why Walker is not practicing at today’s mandatory minicamp.
Not a great sign when a player goes and has surgery without informing his team, but this is the Raiders we are talking about.
As long as Walker has no setbacks, he should be good to go for training camp this summer. As for his fantasy value … Meh. That all depends on what happens in camp with the Oakland offense and if JaMarcus Russell finally sees the light at quarterback. And then fantasy owners will have to worry about whether or not Walker can stay on the field.
Devin Thomas [WR, Redskins]
From ProFootballTalk:
“Devin Thomas recently had laser eye surgery and it has helped him significantly,” Rosenhaus says. “The Redskins have been very pleased with his recent work.”
I remember Dwayne Bowe getting laser eye surgery back in his days at LSU, and the difference between one season and the next was light and day. He dropped almost everything only to turn around and become a first-round draft pick a few years later.
Perhaps the same fate can befall Thomas here, although he is a few years behind Bowe’s progression. Keep an eye on him — no pun intended — in camp.
Derrick Mason [WR, Ravens]
From ProFootballTalk:
Mason acknowledged Sunday that he might not be ready for the start of the team’s training camp, due to a lingering shoulder problem.
The aged one battled through a bum shoulder most of last year and still managed to be the most reliable receiver on the Ravens’ roster. But his age may finally be catching up with him and Baltimore could begin looking for an infusion of youth at the wide receiver position to give Mason a battle.
Regardless, as tough as Mason has shown he can be, I expect him to be in training camp ready to go.
The MMR will continue to run every Monday morning as scheduled during the offseason. If you have an injury update or want an update on a certain player, please leave a note in the comments.
