Marc is back with the Rookie Report now that we have an entirely new freshman class in the NFL. Which of these guys will be the next Matt Forte, the recipient of The Hazean’s 2008 Fantasy Rookie of the Year award?
I ranked the rookies by position a few days after the draft, but it was more from a dynasty/keeper perspective. The majority of fantasy football players participate in redraft leagues — leagues that draft new rosters every season — and Marc’s rankings are reflective of those type leagues. Enjoy.
With the 2009 NFL Draft over, it’s never to early to take a look at which rookies will make the biggest fantasy impact on the upcoming NFL season.
Fantasy owners in redraft leagues usually leave the rookies off the draft board until the later rounds, if they get drafted at all. But last year, rookies like Chris Johnson, Matt Ryan, Eddie Royal, DeSean Jackson, Steve Slaton and Matt Forte stole fantasy owners’ hearts from week one.
Some were drafted, others not.
Grabbing the right rookie could make or break a fantasy season, as I am sure Forte and Johnson had their hands in a multitude of owners’ fates last year. Whether you draft one of these guys or hope for a waiver wire pick-up, knowing each of these ten rookies and their situations will be crucial for success during the 2009 fantasy football season.
10. Percy Harvin, WR, Vikings: Harvin is a small, quick receiver that can hit a home run at anytime. If the Vikings sign Brett Favre, Harvin will be the beneficiary of the quick slant Favre loves so much.
9. Hakeem Nicks, WR, Giants: Nicks is a big and fast receiver that should see playing time immediately with the loss of Plaxico Burress. If Nicks can do what he did in his bowl game, expect Eli Manning to look his way early and often.
8. Jeremy Maclin, WR, Eagles: Maclin is a speedy receiver that Donovan McNabb is going to love. He has sure hands and will push for immediate starting time. He should also be a factor on special teams.
7. Matthew Stafford, QB, Lions: When the Lions start the season 0 – 5, Stafford should get the opportunity to suit up. As long as he keeps throwing the rock to Calvin Johnson, he could have decent stats down the stretch.
6. Mark Sanchez, QB, Jets: Sanchez is going to the Jets where the current starter is … Kellen Clemens? He has a pretty good chance to start if he shows a good knowledge of the playbook and the ability to improve.
5. Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Raiders: I’m hoping the Raiders aren’t completely crazy and saw something special in Heyward-Bey. If that’s the case, he should get plenty of opportunities to contribute.
4. Donald Brown, RB, Colts: Brown can be what Jonathan Stewart was for the Panthers last season. Current starter Joseph Addai has struggled running between the tackles and with injuries the past few seasons. Brown should be able to keep Addai fresh while getting plenty of opportunities to pad his own stats.
3. Chris ‘Beanie’ Wells, RB, Cardinals: Wells fell all the way to the second to last pick of the first round and the Cardinals couldn’t have been happier. Wells is expected to come in and possibly start from day one.
2. Michael Crabtree, WR, 49ers: As if Crabtree wasn’t good enough, the nine teams that passed on Crabtree in the draft might have given him another reason to become the best. The 49ers stole Crabtree at No. 10 and were dancing in the streets on draft day.
1. Knowshon Moreno, RB, Broncos: Moreno is going to the Broncos, a place where running backs — no matter how bad (see: Tatum Bell) — can excel. Moreno has all the tools to become one of the best running backs in the league as soon as this year.
