It already has been over a week since the conclusion of the NFL Draft and NFL teams across the country wasted no time by taking the opportunity to showcase rookies the last few days.
Minicamps yielded very little, however, in the way of injury news other than a few small tidbits. Where are all the hamstring pulls and tweaks? Has the new swine flu taken over to such an extent that it now masks all of the NFL injury news?
Well, there was at least one notable hamstring injury, but it could have been a fake (more details on that below). And a first-round rookie failed to make his debut due to an off-the-field incident. Then there is a former first-round pick under the microscope yet again this offseason after failing to live up to expectations — yet again.
All that and more after the jump!
Reggie Bush [RB, Saints]
From ProFootballTalk:
And, to his credit, we’re told that Reggie is working hard in the offseason. Previously, he had been only a part-time visitor at best to the team’s voluntary workout program. This year, his attendance and participation has been close to the 100-percent range.
Another offseason, another prove-yourself-or-else season on the horizon for Bush. The last two years have been cut short by injury, which has turned many fantasy owners off on the guy.
Before going down in 2008, however, Bush was having his best season as a pro. The rushing numbers were not terrific per the usual, but he was dominating in the passing game and making a difference for the Saints on special teams. It looked as if he was putting it all together for a great run down the stretch, but the knee gave out on him once again and … well … here we are again, talking about whether or not he will ever live up to the hype.
Percy Harvin [WR, Vikings]
From ProFootballTalk:
Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press advises that, according to Vikings coach Brad Childress, rookie receiver Percy Harvin isn’t present at the team’s weekend minicamp because Harvin has been hospitalized in Atlanta with “extreme dehydration.”
Uhh, the first rule any elite athlete follows religiously — drink plenty of water.
I understand that Harvin has been jet-setting and that his last week has been full of craziness, but come on man! Grab a few bottles at the airport, it is not going to hurt your checkbook at this point.
In all seriousness though, Harvin should recover quickly from this and, although it was a shame that he could not participate in minicamp, he should be back in plenty of time to join the team for training camp this summer.
Anquan Boldin [WR, Cardinals]
From AZCardinals.com:
Practice ended and Anquan Boldin and Darnell Dockett were sent for precautionary MRIs after they reported hamstring injuries that the team didn’t previously know about. Since both are having contract issues and both are represented by agent Drew Rosenhaus, the math is probably easy to do here.
Reading between the lines here is pretty easy. Boldin is going to avoid any and all activity with the team this offseason due to his status with the front office.
He is in limbo right now, but this hamstring injury is nothing more than an excuse to get away from the field so that he can gain some type of leverage. It also is a good idea for him to stay away to prevent a real injury, so that he can pass a physical if traded. Nothing to see here, really, because I think Boldin could play if there were a game, like, later today.
The MMR will continue to run every Monday morning as scheduled during the offseason. If you have an injury update or want an update on a certain player, please leave a note in the comments.
