Another day, another chapter in the Denver Broncos-Jay Cutler ugly public divorce saga.
Weeks after demanding a trade — at least according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen — from the Broncos after finding out the team had attempted to acquire Matt Cassel, Cutler now claims that he never asked to be traded. He added in an impromptu interview with Fox’s Jay Glazer that he was surprised to hear that Denver had officially put him on the block so soon.
Say what?!?
This is just another display of NFL disinformation at its finest. But regardless of what is being said by the Broncos, Cutler and his agent, several NFL teams are hot after Cutler. At this point, a trade seems inevitable — in fact, one may even happen by the close of business tomorrow, according to several ESPN talking heads (Mort among them).
Stepping away from the drama for a second, here is a look at the potential suitors for Cutler and some quick fantasy impressions on each.
Washington Redskins: Bye-bye Jason Campbell. Chris Cooley, Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle-El all would benefit from the strong arm of Cutler, especially Cooley. Cutler made Tony Scheffler and Daniel Graham — at times — fantasy relevant, imagine what he would do to Cooley’s growing stock.
New York Jets: Meh. Thomas Jones probably would not see much change because of the whole age factor. Leon Washington might catch a few more passes, but Cutler likes to throw downfield. Jerricho Cotchery is not a great deep threat but could easily could become Cutler’s favorite target, unless Dustin Keller continues to improve.
Detroit Lions: Talk about a dream come true for Calvin Johnson owners. Megatron could catch 15+ touchdowns for the next five years with Cutler under center. Kevin Smith would benefit with the addition as well because of the threat of an electric passing game. The rest of the offense needs improvement, but the nucleus would be young, talented and explosive.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Seemingly the only piece of the puzzle currently missing for the Bucs. They have a receiver (Antonio Bryant) coming of a career year with Jeff Garcia at the helm, traded for a Pro Bowl caliber tight end (Kellen Winslow) and added some depth and shiftiness to the running back position (Derrick Ward). The offense would instantly become one of the more fantasy relevant in the league with the addition of Cutler.
Chicago Bears: Da Bears like Kyle Orton, but Cutler is on a whole different plane of existence here. Finally, Chicago could hand the reigns to a legitimate franchise quarterback. And that would be fantastic news for Devin Hester the wide receiver, who made strides by leaps-and-bounds near the end of 2008. Cutler, Hester, Matt Forte and Greg Olsen makes for a nice little foursome in the Windy City.
Minnesota Vikings: Just invested a modest amount of cash in Sage Rosenfels, but I do not think anyone pegs Sage as the team’s franchise quarterback for the next five-to-10 years. The combination of Cutler and Adrian Peterson could give defenses fits and finally get the Vikings over the hump in the NFC North. Both Peterson and Bernard Berrian would see a nice little uptick in fantasy value.
