I would not normally write about a team hiring a new head coach, because most of the time it has little-to-no immediate fantasy impact.
However, I believe that the hiring of Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as the next head coach of the Denver Broncos has a profound effect on the fantasy football scene in Denver.
There was some concern among fantasy owners about the future of Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall following the ouster of long-time Broncos’ head coach Mike Shanahan. Both players had been groomed in Shanahan’s clever and productive offense, which revolved around the passing game this season. If the Broncos had brought in a defensive-minded coach, perhaps the reigns would have been pulled back on the high-powered passing game displayed by Cutler and Co. during 2008.
But I think this move by Denver immediately reverses whatever slide the values of Cutler and Marshall had begun. McDaniels is hailed as an innovative, versatile offensive coordinator who should be able to keep the spotlight on Cutler, Marshall and the rest of the Denver offense going forward.
Fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief, as there is no need to downgrade the Denver offense heading into next season.

I’m a big Denver fan and I think that this is a good hire particularly for Denver’s offensive fantasy outlook. I rode Cutler to victory in several PaperSports.com tournaments this year. And since they are my team, I’m hoping to do the same next year. I think McDaniels will make that happen, or at least not hurt the chances. Until then, fantasy baseball!
Looks promising. The Broncos tried to run the Patriots 2007 offense this season, so they might as well bring the man himself into consult on it for next season. I like me some Cutler next year.
