There only are four weeks for the rookie classmates of 2008 to separate themselves from the field in chasing The Hazean’s Fantasy Rookie of the Year award.

Chicago’s Matt Forte has been the front-runner for a few weeks now, but Steve Slaton, Matt Ryan and Chris Johnson continue to nip at his heels. Is this a four-man race, or do a few of the other rookies have a shot to steal the title by season’s end?

Rookies came up big in week 13 for their respective teams and the top 5 will be hard to break into from here on out. The guys on this list are at the top of their game, and not just against their fellow rookies.

Honorable Mention: DeSean Jackson, WR, Eagles – Jackson and the Eagles got back on track Thursday night against the Cardinals. Jackson scored a touchdown, helping to keep the Eagles playoff hopes alive. He is playing well and trying to work his way back into the top 5.

5. Eddie Royal, WR, Broncos – Royal continues to be a bright spot for the roller coaster known as the Denver Broncos. Royal came up big against the red hot New York Jets, hauling in five passes for 84 yards — including a 59-yard touchdown.

4. Chris Johnson, RB, Titans – CJ got his groove back against the winless, inept Detroit Lions. He would have moved up the list, but all the rookies ahead of him had great games as well. The running attack of the Titans is back and Johnson could be moving up this list in no time.

3. Matt Ryan, QB, Falcons – Every week I think Ryan and the Falcons will come back down to Earth, but every week Ryan won’t let them. He threw two touchdown passes in leading the 8-4 Falcons to another win, this time over the Chargers.

2. Steve Slaton, RB, Texans – Slaton blew up for over 180 total yards and two touchdowns against the struggling Jaguars defense. Looks like sitting him much of the game against the Ravens three weeks ago was a brilliant move by head coach Gary Kubiak. Slaton looks fresh and poised to make a run at this year’s Fantasy Rookie of the Year.

1. Matt Forte, RB, Bears – Forte doesn’t want to let the top spot go. As long as he keeps putting up numbers like 130 total yards and a touchdown, he will be really difficult to pass. Three of their final four games are against the Saints, Jaguars and Lions. With that schedule, no one may catch him.
