Last week I told you guys how to squeak out a close win. But what happens if you end up on the opposite end of that script? Or, more importantly, how do you get there?
To make it a truly heartbreaking loss, your fantasy team has to perform well. So well, in fact, that you would have beaten almost everyone else in the league. Take a look to the left and you will see that The Hazean scored the third-most points in the league in week 10, which would have been good enough to beat nine other teams.
But in order to be on the wrong end of the contest, you have to draw an unlucky matchup. Objective accomplished.
It would not be heartbreaking enough, however, just to have bad luck. There has to be some glimmer of hope for the win. And that hope came in the form of two running backs squaring off against each other on Monday Night Football: Frank Gore and Tim Hightower.
Trailing by 11 points heading into Monday night, The Hazean was in position to steal a late win. In fact, if those were the only two players performing on Monday night the win would have been in the bag. But in order to accomplish the most devastating of losses, another player has to come in and steal the glory.
Enter Vernon Davis. The 49ers’ beleaguered tight end was the only player left to play on Curveballs 4 Jesus’ roster in week 10. Davis, who had not caught a touchdown pass all year, recorded only one catch on Monday night — an 18-yard touchdown at the end of the first. Go figure.
It ended up being the nail in the coffin. Had Davis not scored that touchdown, the combined touchdown-less efforts of Gore and Hightower would have been more than enough to overcome the opposition. But that one catch gave Curveballs 4 Jesus the perfect cushion to hang on for a grueling victory.
To make matters worse, however, and to effectively clinch a truly heartbreaking loss, the 49ers handed Gore the ball inside the two-yard line with only seconds to play against the Cardinals. A touchdown would have won the game for both the 49ers and The Hazean. But true to the heartbreak, Gore barely got touched, stumbled and fell feet short of the games-winning score.
The crushingly close defeat drops The Hazean to 5 - 5 in the blogger league after a promising start to the season:

There still are three weeks to go in the regular season, which gives the team enough time to recover. But the true character of this fantasy team will be on display now after this loss.
Can The Hazean rise to the occasion to avenge last season’s dismal performance? Or will the highest-scoring team in the league continue to fall short of victory and miss out on the playoffs altogether?
These final three weeks will tell the story, so make sure to stay tuned.

What a game! Like I said, I still see us both making the playoffs.
