San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers is the best fantasy quarterback in the land halfway through the NFL’s regular season.

Rivers edges New Orleans’ quarterback Drew Brees for the top spot by a little more than eight points in a standard scoring league (1 point per 25 yards passing, 6 points per touchdown, -2 per turnover). Rivers and Brees appear to be separating themselves from the rest of the field.

Four weeks ago, the two were ranked Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, behind Jay Cutler and Brett Favre. The latter quarterbacks have since cooled while Rivers and Brees have remained red hot, as evidenced by their shootout in London last weekend.

Meanwhile, Cutler has fallen to No. 5 in the rankings after a poor showing on Monday Night Football against the Patriots. Favre has thrown seven interceptions in his last three games, dropping him to No. 7 among quarterbacks.

Three in, three out

There are three newcomers to the top-12 party.

Matt Schaub, Peyton Manning and Kyle Orton have joined the ranks of the QB1s. The trio replaced J.T. O’Sulllivan, Eli Manning and Trent Edwards, all of who struggled a bit after the fourth week of the season.

O’Sullivan, in particular, struggled enough over the last four weeks to be replaced as the 49ers’ starting quarterback. Shaun Hill will take over in San Francisco.

Staying power

Five other quarterbacks have remained in the top-12 at both the quarter pole and midway point: Aaron Rodgers, Kurt Warner, Tony Romo, Jason Campbell and Donovan McNabb.

Of these five, Tony  Romo may be the first to bow out of the list of QB1s in the next four weeks. He has missed the Cowboys’ last two games with a bum pinky finger and is expected to miss again this weekend. The Cowboys have a bye in week 10, which also will limit his numbers for the next quarter of the season. I would not be surprised to see him off this list after the next quarter, even though he is expected to return after the bye.
