Daily Haze

So I kept it under wraps because it was proposed and accepted after our Start & Sit column on Friday, but I made another friendly wager with a blogger for the Saints - Chargers game on Sunday.

Doug from Football Burrito offered the following challenge:

Football Burrito is based out of San Diego, The Hazean is based in New Orleans and the two websites had a friendly wager on Sunday’s game with the loser writing a guest post on the winner’s website.

And this time, I came out on the winning end of the bet. So here it is: Why Drew Brees is a better quarterback than Philip Rivers, courtesy of Football Burrito:

Drew Brees led San Diego to a 4-12 record in 2003, sealing his fate in the Chargers organization. After a draft day trade, San Diego grabbed Philip Rivers 4th overall and if it wasn’t for an extended holdout Rivers might have started game one of the ‘04 season.

Brees finally blossomed and had an outstanding season in ‘04 but instead of keeping 2 good QB’s the Chargers decided to let Brees leave as a free agent. This summer Football Burrito recommended you hold off on Tom Brady and Tony Romo and take Brees, who you could get at a cheaper price than the other two. While Brady and Romo have been sidelined by injuries, Brees would still be competing for the MVP even if they were healthy.

Brees has the best coach in the NFL for a QB, Sean Payton. Not only does Payton love to throw the ball, but unlike the Mike Martz QB’s Brees hardly ever throws interceptions or gets sacked. This is amazing for a QB who takes so many chances deep downfield. In comparison, Brett Favre also loves to throw the ball down field but throws an interception or two every week. Like Brees, Ben Roethlisberger buys time in the pocket but he is among the league leaders in sacks allowed with 23, Brees has only allowed 7.

If the season ended today not only would Drew Brees be better than Philip Rivers, but he is currently the best QB in the NFL.

Thanks for the Drew Brees love. He is the man. And as a Saints fan, it goes without saying that I thank the Chargers organization for letting him go. Hit the jump for today’s great reads.
