Fantasy football does not get any easier for owners in week 6.
Injuries and bye weeks continue to wreak havoc on fantasy owners, crippling rosters and forcing a multitude of waiver wire transactions.
Some players with injuries to watch as the weekend progresses: Brian Westbrook, Kellen Winslow, Marques Colston and Anquan Boldin.
Westbrook said he wants to suit up against the 49ers, but Andy Reid seems skeptical. It might be prudent to keep him out this week with the Eagles’ bye next weekend to give Westy some time to heal.
Winslow was hospitalized today with what the Browns are calling an illness. He is expected to be released from the hospital later today but will be listed as questionable for the game on Monday night.
Boldin likely will not suit up in what should be a shoot-out with the Cowboys, but there is some good news on the wide receiver front: Colston has been practicing with the Saints since Wednesday and could play this weekend against Oakland. I would advise against starting him just yet, but he is coming back ahead of schedule which is great news for Colston owners.
Start ‘em
Quarterbacks
- Eli Manning @ Browns: Eli has been one of the most pleasant surprises this season as a consistent and reliable fantasy quarterback. He should be able to shine again this week on national television against a struggling Browns team.
- Matt Schaub v. Dolphins: Schaub returns from illness this weekend to make his first home start since Hurricane Ike ripped through south Texas. There should be plenty of offense to go around in this one.
Runningbacks
- Julius Jones v. Packers: Jones may be relied up heavily once again to pace the Seattle offense. Green Bay struggled a little bit defensively last weekend as some injuries took their toll, and it may take another week or two before this unit gets back on track.
- Le’Ron McClain @ Colts: Everyone knows how much the Colts struggle against the run without Bob Sanders. Make sure to start McClain if you have him, he should get a few opportunities to punch one — or more — into the endzone.
Wide receivers
- Santana Moss v. Rams: Yes, Moss did get shut down last weekend. It happens from time-to-time with the guy. But he should rebound this weekend against everyone’s favorite fantasy punching bag, the Rams.
- Plaxico Burress @ Browns: Just your friendly reminder that Burress is back in the Giants starting lineup this weekend. Make sure he is in your fantasy lineups as well.
Tight end
- Zach Miller @ Saints: While the Saints can play run D, the passing defense in New Orleans remains suspect. The Raiders are expected to open up the offense a little more under the new regime, which means more JaMarcus Russell and — potentially — more Miller. He is a good bye-week tight end.
Sit ‘em
Quarterbacks
- David Garrard @ Broncos: Garrard is getting his groove back, but still not consistent to enough to rely on as an every-week starter. The Jags likely will rely on the ground game against the porous Denver defense in this one.
- Matt Hasselbeck v. Packers: Hasselbeck not only has been struggling this year, he also is battling some nagging injuries now. He has been on the sit list way too much this year for his owners, but here he is again this weekend.
Runningbacks
- Edgerrin James v. Cowboys: This game has shoot-out written all over it. I also have a feeling this could be Tim Hightower’s introduction to the nation. James may get some yardage between the 20s, but the passing games will steal the spotlight for both teams.
- Darren McFadden @ Saints: We all saw what the Saints’ defense could do against a powerful runningback when they shut down Adrian Peterson on Monday Night Football. Couple that with the fact that McFadden still is nursing a turf toe makes keeping him on the bench a good play.
Wide receivers
- Chris Chambers v. Patriots: Chambers is battling an ankle sprain but has not be ruled out by the Chargers yet. Fantasy owners should rule him out, however. Being that he plays late Sunday night, fantasy owners will need to make a decision on his status well before game-time, meaning it might be best to go elsewhere than hope for Chambers to play.
- Reggie Brown @ 49ers: Another player battling injuries. Brown has been solid since returning to the starting lineup, but he has been limited in practice this week and could be limited in this one.
Tight end
- Tony Scheffler v. Jaguars: I know it is kind of lame, but it was hard to find a tight end not to start this weekend. Scheff made this easy by being declared out for this game, but you need to know that as well. Make sure he is on our bench and try to grab a spot starter, like the above-mentioned Miller, Dustin Keller or Anthony Fasano.
