Excuse my French, but there were buttloads of mostly minor injuries across the NFL yesterday. And most of them had impacts on fantasy rosters yesterday and some could have consequences going forward.
It all started with a couple of guys who were scratches for this weekend.
Houston quarterback Matt Schaub was scracthed from the home tilt against the Colts in favor of Sage Rosenfels because of an illness. And we all know how that worked out for the Texans. If healthy, there is no doubt Houston wants Schaub back behind center next weekend.
Anquan Boldin also missed week 5 after suffering a gruesome hit in last week’s loss to the Jets. He could return as early as week 6, but that may be pushing it. Keep an eye on his status throughout the week to see if he gets any practice time. If not, look elsewhere for help at wide receiver next weekend.
Hit the jump for this week’s MMR.
Brian Westbrook [RB, Eagles]
From RotoWorld:
The Eagles revealed Monday that Brian Westbrook has fractured ribs.
Yikes. Another injury for Westy. When you rely on one player for so much of your offense, these things are bound to start adding up.
He did return to the game after the injury yesterday, which means he could play in week 6. But he likely will be limited in practice again this week and his status will be up in the air until game time, which is becoming the norm for the Philly back.
Have Correll Buckhalter ready to go on Sunday against the 49ers if necessary.
UPDATE: OK, this injury is a little more serious than I first thought. Westbrook is in serious jeopardy of missing next weekend’s game against the 49ers, which means Buckhalter would get the start.
Chris Chambers [WR, Chargers]
From ProFootballTalk:
San Diego receiver Chris Chambers, who has been having a great year in his first full season with the Chargers, has been carted off during his return visit to Miami, where he spent the first eight-plus years of his career.
It now appears that Chambers suffered an ankle injury of some kind, but no definitive word out of San Diego yet. Orginally, it was feared that he had done some significant knee/ankle damage, but that now does not appear to be the case. The team should make an announcement sometime today after doing some tests on Chambers’ limb.
Regardless, he did score a touchdown before leaving which saved his fantasy owners. The injury is being called an ankle sprain which, depending on the severity, could limit Chambers in practice this week and keep him out of next weekend’s game. But until the Chargers make an official announcement, all bets are off.
Trent Edwards [QB, Bills]
From FanHouse:
On the first drive of today’s Cardinals game, Adrian Wilson came unblocked off the corner on a safety blitz. Edwards got rid of the ball in time, but Wilson was close enough to lift him off the ground and drive him to turf on his right shoulder. Edwards was attended to on the field for a couple of minutes, then immediately driven by a cart to the locker room. The initial report is that he is being treated for a concussion.
Edwards’ head slammed onto the turf during the hit by Wilson, which did indeed cause a concussion. His status for week 6 is unknown, and his early exit really hurt fantasy owners in week 5.
Chances are he will be questionable to play next weekend, meaning fantasy owners need to prepare to be without Mr. Edwards.
Eddie Royal [WR, Broncos]
From NFL.com:
Broncos rookie WR Eddie Royal suffered an apparent lower left leg injury on a punt return midway through the third quarter against the Buccaneers.
Luckily, it turns out that Royal’s ankle sprain is not of the high variety, which means it is not as severe as initially anticipated.
If it holds up this week and he gets some practice in by Thursday, he should be good to go for week 6. Monitor his progress in practice this week closely.
Deion Branch [WR, Seahawks]
From NFL.com:
Deion Branch made his season debut for the Seahawks in Week 5 after missing nearly 10 months with a torn ACL he suffered last season. His return was brief, however, as he left Sunday’s game vs. the Giants with a left heel injury and didn’t play during the second half.
It was nice to see Branch back on the field, and the game started off pretty well for him as he hauled in three passes for 31 yards in the first half.
But the injury sidelined him for the rest of the game, negating the good start to the comeback. Hopefully the ankle injury does not prevent Branch from practicing this week, as he needs to get in as much football action as possible in order to get back into game shape.
Until he escapes the injury report, it might be best to keep Branch stashed on the bench.
The MMR will continue to run every Monday morning as scheduled during the regular season. To stay updated on current NFL injuries later in the week keep an eye on Football Jabber’s injury column, The Bedpan.
