Tom Brady owners rejoice! Brady did not get injured this week.
That probably stings. But the good news for Brady owners that grabbed Matt Cassel after last week’s injury heard round the world is that Cassel looked decent managing the Patriots’ offense.
He made zero mistakes (read: turnovers), did not force the ball into tight spots and played capably under center, directing the Patriots into scoring territory on several occasions. New England came away with more field goals than Patriots’ fans may have liked, but I think it was a promising sign.
Wes Welker owners can breathe a sigh of relief as well. Cassel’s game management included lots of Welker, making use of quick screens, slants and crossing patterns to the wily Welker. He appears very much a part of the gameplan with Cassel under center, but the same could not be said for Moss yesterday.
However, I do think that as the Pats become more comfortable with Cassel under center, he will start taking shots downfield to Moss. So I would not panic just yet. Yesterday was a good start for Cassel and Co.
Now, for those players that did get hurt this weekend, hit the jump.
Vince Young [QB, Titans]
From ProFootballTalk:
The recent post from MDS regarding Peter King’s report that Titans quarterback Vince Young has lost the locker room (by the way, Eddie George says the same thing on FSN’s PFP . . . check your local listing for the next showing) convinces us that, barring a dramatic turn of events, Young will never play football again for the Tennessee Titans, and possibly never play again for any team.
Young does not appear to want to play football anymore, even though he said he does this week. I just do not see the desire.
If I owned Vince Young in a redraft league, he would be on the market right now. Kerry Collins managed the offense well yesterday and looks like he could hold onto that job even if Vince comes back.
Keeper and dynasty owners of Young could hold onto him and hope for the best.
LaDainian Tomlinson [RB, Chargers]
From NFL.com:
CBS Sports just showed LaDainian Tomlinson on the sidelines with his right cleat off. Trainers are now looking at his injured big toe. This could be really bad news for fantasy owners.
Is Tomlinson’s body finally breaking down?
I speculated this offseason that it could be the beginning of the end for LT, after suffering his first major injury near the end of last season. Now, the toe is bothering him enough for the Chargers to pull him in favor of the younger, more-spry Darren Sproles.
LT owners would be wise to grab Sproles ASAP if available.
Carson Palmer [QB, Bengals]
From FanHouse:
For all the distractions, Michael Lombardi writes on SI.com that the Bengals should be more concerned about quarterback Carson Palmer, who had one of the worst outings of his football career — at any level — last week. He was 9 of 24 for 94 yards, 0 TDs, and 1 pick against Baltimore.
Two weeks of terrible offense from the Bengals. I hate to say it because I know fantasy owners are relying on the guy, but it might be time to bench him indefinitely.
Not sure if it is the knee bothering him or the fact that the offense is not clicking, but something clearly is wrong in Cincinnati and it goes beyond the playing field at this point.
Devin Hester [KR, Bears]
From ProFootballTalk:
Hester aggravated a rib injury during a return, and it has been announced that he is out for the rest of the game.
This could be pretty bad news for fantasy owners of the Chicago defense/special teams. Hester has not shown much in the passing game so far this season, despite offseason reports that he could be the team’s No. 1 wide receiver.
Dallas Clark [TE, Colts]
From NFL.com:
NFL Network’s Adam Schefter just told me Dallas Clark has a slightly torn medial collateral ligament.
Bad news for Clark owners, as he likely will be listed as questionable every weekend.
The MMR will continue to run every Monday morning as scheduled during the regular season. To stay updated on current NFL injuries later in the week keep an eye on Football Jabber’s injury column, The Bedpan.
