Our first Start/Sit of the season did not go entirely as planned yesterday. I guess I still am shaking off some of the rust, as Jason Campbell looked lost in the new offensive system in Washington and Eli Manning was not as terrible as I thought he would be, though he probably was not good enough to start for your fantasy team this week.

In other news about starting this week, Antonio Gates will start for the Chargers on Sunday. This contradicts a report yesterday that he would not start, but would see action in the team’s first game of the season.

I boldly predicted all offseason that Gates would not be ready for the first week, but it now appears that he will see significant action. If you drafted him, I think you need to start him, but I would watch is performance very, very closely if you can. There may be some lingering effects from the foot injury he suffered and it could limit his playing time and productivity.

Hit the jump for the rest of this week’s start and sit.

Start ‘em

Quarterbacks

  • Kurt Warner @ 49ers: Warner has a history of lighting up the 49ers, and it should continue this weekend. He has plenty of weapons at his disposal against a pass defense that ranked in the 20s last year. Plus, he gets to exact a little revenge against former coach Mike Martz.
  • Jeff Garcia @ Saints: Look, if you are ever going to use Garcia it should be against the Saints. The secondary still is suspect and Mike McKenzie is not back to full strength yet, even though he did look good during preseason. The Saints’ D should be improved, but may look a little out of sync in week one.

Runningbacks

  • Thomas Jones @ Dolphins: Jones could be in for a resurgent fantasy season, beginning this weekend in Miami. With Brett Favre at the helm, the Dolphins’ defense will have to respect the passing game, giving Jones some nice running lanes. 100 yards and a score are more than possible.
  • Michael Turner v. Lions: With rookie Matt Ryan leading the offense, expect the Falcons to rely heavily on the running game against Detroit starting with Turner. The only thing I would worry about is if the Atlanta offense can keep pace with Detroit’s. If so, Turner should be in line for 20 touches.

Wide receivers

  • Joey Galloway @ Saints: Galloway is notorious for decimating the Saints’ secondary, and I expect he will torch the New Orleans secondary at least once this weekend. The Saints’ defense has a lot of new faces and could be out of sync, so this would be a good opportunity to take advantage of a good matchup on paper.
  • Jerricho Cotchery @ Dolphins: Cotchery is in line for a big season with Brett Favre under center. He reminds me a little of Greg Jennings. Favre will look to hit him on slants and some go routes, and Cotchery has the big-play potential to post big numbers this season, starting against Miami this weekend.

Tight end

  • Owen Daniels @ Steelers: Daniels enters this year under the radar a little bit, even though more people know his name now. He draws a good matchup this weekend in what could be an offensive affair. He will take some pressure off Andre Johnson by going over the middle, and Matt Schaub has sent Daniels a fair number of targets in the past.

Sit ‘em

Quarterbacks

  • Matt Hasselbeck @ Bills: Hasselbeck claims to be 100 percent healthy, but that is the least of my concerns. I wonder to whom he is going to throw the football. Nate Burleson and Courtney Taylor are not going to scare anyone, particularly a decent defense in the Bills at home.
  • Vince Young v. Jaguars: VY had a terrible preseason passing the ball, and the Titans likely will rely on defense and the run game to control this game. Young is in for a tough day against an annually underrated defense.

Runningbacks

  • LenDale White v. Jaguars: This game should feature a lot of conservative, run-first offense. White should touch the ball 15 - 20 times on the ground, but may not eclipse the 100-yard barrier. Chris Johnson will steal some touches as well, and could provide the big-play threat for the Titans’ offense.
  • Darren McFadden v. Broncos: I am not ready to plug this guy into the starting lineup yet. Hopefully McFadden owners have enough runningback depth to keep him on the bench the early part of this season, while his role on offense gets defined.

Wide receivers

  • Chad Johnson @ Ravens: I know he changed his name, but it is going to take me a little while to start calling him Chad Ocho Cinco. Dude is weird. And he also struggles against the Ravens. I was leaning toward suggesting him as a starter this week, but I do worry enough about his health and ability to be successful against Baltimore to keep him on the bench.
  • Marvin Harrison v. Bears: Harrison is not listed on the injury report, but teammate Reggie Wayne clearly has become Peyton Manning’s favorite passing target in the offense. When you factor in the touches Joseph Addai, Dallas Clark and Anthony Gonzalez will get, Harrison has too much to compete with this weekend.

Tight end

  • Jeremy Shockey v. Buccaneers: First game with a new team, coming off injury … I like Shockey at lot this year, enough to name him to the All-Preseason First Team, but I would be hesitant in using him this weekend.
