Before blowing his ACL in the middle of the 2007 season, Ronnie Brown was having his best professional football year to date. He was shedding the bust label each and every week on a bad, bad football team.

But the knee injury, which ended Brown’s season, allowed concern about his ability to complete a season to reemerge. Brown, however, showed a great deal of progress through the spring and summer months and his rehab appeared to be going well.

Until yesterday.

Rumors began flying around the internet, possibly started by an ESPN report, that Brown was on the trading block. Even worse, the rumors became that the Dolphins may even go as far as to cut Brown completely.

Luckily for Brown and his owners, however, Miami head coach Tony Sparano sqaushed the rumors of Brown getting cut or traded yesterday.

However, Brown does enter the 2008 season now as the No. 2 man on the depth chart behind — wait for it — Ricky Williams. The 31-year-old Williams is having a late resurgance, running strong during the team’s early preseason games. Although he has not shown the flashed of brillance that once made him one of the best backs in the league, Williams has shown much more than Brown.

Brown’s preseason can be summed up in a word: dismal. Five carries for six yards, one reception for three yards.

Yes, it is just preseason. But for a guy who admitted to struggling with the mental aspect of returning from a major knee injury, those numbers say it all.

So what do his fantasy owners do?

Hopefully you were able to grab Ricky Williams as a handcuff for Brown during your fantasy draft. And if you have not drafted yet, targetting Williams might not be a bad idea if you grab Brown at some point.

If you do not have Williams but are a Brown owner, now might be the time to feel out the Williams’ owner and see what he/she is looking for in exchange. I would not press the panic button just yet, however, so make sure not to give up too much for Williams’ services. He is just as injury prone as the next guy, and remember that he is over-the-hill as far as runningbacks are concerned.
