The highly anticipated debut of rookie runningback Darren McFadden happened this past weekend. He played in his first preseason action of his career. He carried the ball 12 times for 48 yards, an average of four yards per carry.

When coming out of college McFadden was considered to be a big play guy that won’t really carry the ball a bunch. He showed he has the patience to be an every down back and not need the big play.

His longest run of the night, however, was a mere six yards. He didn’t let that faze him and just continued to plug away. His average of four yards per carry is very respectable, but once the big plays come expect a higher average.

The ability of McFadden can do exactly for the Raiders what Reggie Bush did for the Saints in his rookie year. Don’t expect quick results, though, because the Raiders don’t have the same quality quarterback as Drew Brees of the Saints.

But if second-year player JaMarcus Russell can show improvement McFadden can be in for a big season. Don’t be afraid of other runningbacks like Justin Fargas or Michael Bush because Al Davis didn’t pay McFadden to be the back up. As soon as McFadden learns the offense he will be the starter.

A visit to the playoffs isn’t that far away for the young Raiders team.
