Time for some NFC training camp updates, courtesy of our friend Marc. He took a different approach to the updates than Blaine, who published the AFC updates on Tuesday. There is just so much news coming out of camps these days, it is hard to blog about everything. So this little roundup should cover most of our bases. Keeping checking back on Tuesdays and Thursdays for training camp roundups.
Training camps are about two weeks in and there are plenty of updates around the NFC. I’ll update a different division in the NFC each week. Lets start the first edition of NFC training camp updates in the NFC West.
St. Louis Rams: The Rams could be in trouble this season if they can’t get Steven Jackson to report. Jackson has already missed at least 12 days of practice and it doesn’t look like the sides are getting close to reaching a contract agreement. I feel sorry for those people who are sitting at pick 5. How can you pass up on Jackson at 5? The answer is you can’t and the Rams will eventually reach an agreement with Jackson. As the proud new owner of Steven Jackson, you will just have to sweat it out till he signs.
San Francisco 49ers: The main battle in training camp is the battle at quarterback between Alex Smith, J.T. O’Sullivan and Shaun Hill. The coaches don’t seem to be sold on Alex Smith by the way they are giving extra reps to career backups Hill and O’Sullivan. Expect Smith to win the job in the end, but I wouldn’t draft the eventual starter until you see how he performs in the Martz complex offensive scheme.
Arizona Cardinals: The Cardinals are dealing with injuries and an unhappy star all at the same position. Rookie draft pick Early Doucet will miss the first preseason game against the Saints tonight due to a hamstring injury. Superstar Anquan Boldin is going to miss the preseason game as well due to a strained hamstring, but more than likely it’s because he is unhappy with his contract. Boldin could be a distraction to this team all season long if they don’t show him the money!
Seattle Seahawks: The big position of question has to be the runningback position in Seattle. Granted they have a bunch of depth, but are any of the guys going to be good enough to replace Shaun Alexander? Early camp signs point to a RBBC offense. Maurice Morris and Julius Jones are expected to be involved in both the running and passing game. T.J. Duckett is most likely to be short-yardage and goaline back. Jones will probably have the most fantasy value, but I definately would not reach on any runningback in this pass-first offense.
